Our Story

The Banburra Story

Banburra means ''to dig'' originating from Bangerang language in the Murray River region.

Leon’s family connection to Bangerang language and country is significant through his Mums family ancestry. Leon’s Grandfather, a proud Bangerang man, was born and raised on the Cummeragunga Aboriginal Mission. The mission sits on the banks of the Murray River (Dhungala), just over the bridge from Barmah in Northern Victoria. Leon’s sense of connection to the lands and waterways of Bangerang Country is a strong spiritual and physical existence and it is where he and his family enjoy spending as much time as they can.

Artwork Story

The artwork by Ngarrindjeri artist Jordan Lovegrove shows the story of Banburra, an Indigenous business in collaboration with Delcon Group.

Banburra, a Construction business, focuses on providing Indigenous employment and meaningful career opportunities in the civil construction industry.

The partnership between Banburra and Delcon Group is strongly represented and symbolized within the artwork, using strong earthy colours that represent Bangerang country, and showcase a meeting place featuring the 2 different coloured digging sticks to acknowledge the business partnership connection.

The pathway represents the supported journey which connects to a larger meeting place centred over the top of the Murray River (Dhungala) which symbolizes inclusive opportunities for many. The blue curving symbolism signifies the Murray River (Dhungala) with a sandhill represented alongside by the dotted yellow colour which is a feature of the area. Incorporated in the artwork story is the Yorta Yorta totem, the Long-Necked Freshwater Turtle native to the Murray River (Dhungala).

All of these elements connect the narrative to cultural roots and weaves together the partnership, cultural identity, and environmental significance, inviting a deeper understanding of the rich meaning within the relationship between Banburra , Delcon Group and the Indigenous communities they serve.
